Students create a personalized avatar. They select the background, the clothing, eye color, hair color and shape, and accessories. They record their voices either directly on the website or with the voice recorder on the computer. They may also call Voki and record from their phone. Students send their Vokis to the teacher who may post them on a blog, wiki, or website. |
If you are in need of free sound recording software, Audicity is a great solution. It is freeware and is easy to use. Talk to your tech people to install this program in your classroom and school lab.

CLEAR - Center for Language Education and Research "The Center of Language Education and Research (CLEAR) at Michigan State University was established in 1996 as a Language Resource Center (LRC) through a Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education." "MIMEA is a series of interactive multimedia modules for language learning, practice, and assessment. The modules are based on video clips that show native speakers and nonnative speakers interacting in natural, unscripted situations. Interactive exercises reinforce language and cultural topics that spring from the scenarios." Rich Internet Applications for Language Learning When you sign up for a free account from CLEAR, you have access to several easy to use web tools to enhance student learning.

Mini Language Lab! SanDisk Sansa Fuze (2,4,8 GB) Sync this MP3 with language podcasts, books/ textooks on CD or video podcats. This inexpensive MP3 player allows you to record yourself and transfer the files onto any computer!

This program (free and premium versions) allow you to take snapshots and video of what is on your screen and add them to your blog, website, presentations, and word processing documents. Students could record themselves using Google Maps and Tours to explain monuments and history. It is a sleek way of teaching others how to use a program or navigate a website. See my example below.

These small, but powerful cameras are wonderful for the World Language classroom.
Flip:Internal memory and a USB connection make uploading videos stress-free. Visit Woot.com to see if they are offering refurbished cameras. I bought five cameras at $70.00 each! Flip video cameras - Electronics-Expo Flip video cameras - Ecost.com Flip video cameras - Amazon.com
Kodak Zi8: No internal memory, but it has an external microphone jack for a lapel-type microphone and it takes 5mg stills. HD quality videos, rugged! Kodak Zi8 - Buy.com Kodak Zi8 - Newegg.com

Webcams Webcams work with computers and normally stay mounted on the computer or workstation. Use a webcam to connect with schools on SKYPE! You could also record student presentations or video podcasts for absent students.
Fast, easy, and no frills recording! Record yourself directly on the web. Students can record their anwers to a prompt and send them to you by e-mail. There is no editing option available and you cannot save the recording directly to your computer. However, you may save the e-mail that has the link to the recording.
Headset with microphone Choose from a variety of styles and prices. Headsets allow students to record themselves and to listen to the vast array media available to World Language learners.
GCast is a way for you to make a Podcast of yourself or your students without the typical GargeBand (or similiar) software. Possibly the most powerful, impressive tool for World Language learning! iPod touch! Canby, Oregon school district has purchased an iPod touch for every student in the district. Learn how the teachers and students have benefited from this incredible tool. 1. iPod touch users Wiki - Joe Morelock, technology director

Upload a picture of yourself and change as many of the options you want. You can use the free options or the point rated options to outfit your new look. This is quite fun!
iPod Touch and iPhone options for recording ! There are several apps (applications) available on the iTunes store that will allow you to record student projects. If you have the iTouch, you will need a headset with a microphone. If you have the iPhone, you should have a headset with microphone or try one of these. Please read the comptability carefully, I have ordered the wrong microphone in the past! iTunes Voice Recording Applications In the iStore search, type VOICE RECORD and click SEE ALL to look at all of the options. Many are free, some are $1.99. Here are two good options. SpeakEasy Voice Recorder - $1.99 (cheap!) VoiceNotes - Free! Check compatibilty!
Griffen iTalk Pro Microphone $10.00! (Ebay seller: iPodontheroad) Nota Bene: You must check the iPods that you are planning to use for compatibility. The microphones DO work with the 2nd generation iPod Nano and 5th generation iPod video. The microphone will NOT work neither with the iPod touch (see next box) nor the iPhone.
Yabla - Not free, but fairly inexpensive Yabla does the work that none of us want to do! It finds video in the target language and adds subtitles. As students watch the videos, they are able to gloss words or hide the subtitles. The vocabulary is paced for words per minute and by level of difficulty. You may assign videos to your students and there are games for them to play based on the vocabulary.
LiveMocha - Free! LiveMocha is a fairly new site that allows students to interact with native speakers, record their voices, take quizzes, etc. The website is fairly dense and takes some practice navigating. However, it is quite well organized and tracks your progress.
VoiceThread example: Rachael Hodgson - Mount Vernon High VoiceThread is an amazing and FREE tool. Teachers set up an initial question to the students (with or without picture prompt) and students record their replies and post it to the common site. In this way, students and teachers are able to hear and react to each other's ideas!
Activities for Interactive Whiteboards (SmartBoard and Promethean Board) NB: You do not need an Interactive Whiteboard to use these activities. By projecting the sites on your regular screen, your students interact with the activities on the presentation computer. If you have a wireless mouse, pass the mouse around the class to increase interactivity.

Podcasts for language learners Podcasts are ideal for supplementary language exposure. There are podcasts designed for native speakers (news, shows, music) and for language learners (French word-a-day, German idioms, Spanish grammar conjugations). A variety of both may be used to enhance the listner's experience. Podcasts are FREE internet-based audio or video programs (think radio show) that are distributed periodically. Listeners/viewers DO NOT need an iPod or mp3 player to listen to or watch podcasts. Podcasts can be streamed directly from the computer. Most people use iTunes (free, PC and Mac) to organize their "subscriptions." Additionally, podcasts aggregators such as Juice and PodcastAlley allow non- iTunes users to search for and subscribe to their favorite sites. If you use podcats and know of a helpful addition to this list, please send it to me. My e-mail is at the top of the page! To access these podcasts: Download iTunes or use a Google search for the titles that I have listed.
